You are a Fortune Teller!
Looks like you identify with the The Fortune Teller type of Imposter Syndrome
The Fortune Teller—A futurist who likes to look at what the future will hold. The Fortune Teller makes bets on what tech or future innovations will be needed. They hold this ability to be paramount in the success of the business. If anything is not predicted accurately, shame sets in.
Here are five solutions for breaking free for “The Fortune Teller” Imposter Syndrome:
- Say “I don’t know” Learn to utter these words. It’s ok to not know the future. It’s ok to not fully understand where technology and business is heading.
- Put the crystal ball away. Give yourself a break and don’t put so much pressure on yourself to know all the answers. It is more important to know what you are going to do today than what the future holds. Dr. Stephen Covey talks about this in his “Circle of Influence and Circle of Concern” principles.
- Use data. Preparing for future eventualities is an important business skill but using data and reevaluating that data repeatedly even if it mean your original estimation might be wrong. Don’t only guess based on gut feel. Find data that supports your ideas and predictions. Then be willing to challenge your own predictions
- Think Again. Adopt Adam Grant’s philosophy to Think Again.
- Let go of the shame. Your worth or lack thereof isn’t dependent on whether or not you can predict the future. Release the importance you place on being the clairvoyant entrepreneur. Your worth is infinite and eternal regardless of whether or not you know every coming event and technology. It’s ok to be wrong. It doesn’t change who you are.
